Let's Talk LINUX Tonight

Some know what LINUX is alot do not.. Basically it's another Operating System similar to Windows but has more in common with UNIX.. Don't worry I won't talk long about this subject.. I got exposed to a flavor of UNIX years ago on a SGI System running IRIX ??, I don't remember the version.. Anyways, last month I was bored and was looking around and stumbled across KNOPPIX which is another flavor of Linux. The interesting thing about this OS is you can burn an Image to a CD and then boot to LINUX on your computer with windows no where to be found.. I sorta like that idea, hehe.. There are a few different version of what they call "Live" CD's meaning you can download them and then burn it to a CD and boot your computer from it.. The really cool thing about the Live CD's is it will figure out all your hardware, i.e. Modem, Video Card, USB Devices, etc. and configure itself to your computer.. I was up and surfing the Net in no time at all.. Don't worry it will do nothing to harm you precious computer.. Alot of the Hardcore Linux users will usually say this kind of Linux basically sucks, and yes it may.. But!!, for us First Timers it's a great way to play around without having to try to figure out how to install and configure a whole lot of stuff we know nothing about yet.. If and when I get a new machine, I will probably install Linux on it first thing, because it is "Way" more stable than windows, alot faster, and just nicer to look at.. hehe.. As for "Gaming" the Gaming Companies need to get off their Butts and start "Porting" more games over to Linux.. And if your asking can I run all my Windows programs on Linux, the answer is "NO" or should I say Not Yet.. There is a ongoing project called "WINE" that is adding CODE for Linux that will allow Windows Programs to run under it.. Wine works with quite a few programs now and more are being added all the time.. I think someone even got DOOM 3 running on Linux, tho I no longer have the link to the article, Sorry!!.. So I'll end this little segment now and let you all look at LINUX if your interested.. Here is a link to other "Distros" of Linux, meaning other Flavors or you could say, "The same thing with a different look and features" I guess.. I sure I left alot out, but well what the Hell..

More in a few minutes, Nature seems to be calling..

Ahhh!!.. That's better.. Now where was I?.. Hmm, nevermind we'll talk about Music or something else..

Sometime I shall talk about my days on the road with Rock & Roll Bands, but not now cause it would take a couple of pages for that and it's getting late again.. I think for now I'll give it up for tonight and maybe get a fresh start tomorrow after looking for a real job... haha

On this day:

Oh My God, it's Monday Night Already! Time for Some Graphics Stuff

On tonights show, that's right kiddies you'll hear me say: Oh My God it's Monday Night Already!.. Well I got barely nothing accomplished today except sending out maybe two Resumes and getting up very early after only a couple of hours of sleep..

So tonight I would like to talk a bit about Computer Graphics.. I was looking through my Bookmarks and ran across a site I used to use "Alot".. When I was working in L.A. and for a company that produced graphics we were always trying to match "Fonts" on someones logo or some other thing we were doing.. If I remember correctly someone brought in this site and boy did it help.. What The Font is basically a website that you can upload a few characters of a "Scanned" sample of text and have it analyse it to try and determine what Type Face it is.. Of course they offer other things on their site but I was really thankful this one came along.. So if you ever get hung up and can't remember that Font from the nearly 12,000 that you have probably committed to memory, try this site.. For those who see all those strange little symbols and characters in peoples emails, on some forums, and all over the Internet, they are ASCII Codes/Symbols which you can find out how to use on that link right before these words.. Here are some more for ya Typing Accents & Special Characters .. So there ya go..

On a related note, people have asked me for sites that offer FREE Photo Editors and the like.. Well after some searching I came up with a few and I'm here to offer them up to ya.. The first one comes recommended by alot of friends.. Irfranview is FREE!!!.. I like that.. For you 3D people that want another Free software program to play around with you should try 3D Blender .. And for you Guys & Gals that just have to have those little Animated Pictures on your Homepage, this ones for you Free Gif Creators .. And last but not totally "Least", here is a site with a few other free Photo Editing options.. Top 6 Free Photo Editors for Windows .. And if you new to PhotoShop and are having a few problems making your sisters picture look like a Toad with a bad hangover, you can look at these two sites for some really good Tutorials.. Planet PhotoShop & PhotoShop Tutorials .. So go get 'em kiddies!..

Not wanting to leave my Apple Computer Friends or should I say "Mac Addicts" out in the Cold..Brrrrrrr! I have a couple of sites for you too.. First up Mac OS X Hints a Great Site where all the "Addicts" share their Tweaks and Tid Bits with other Addicts.. hehe.. And if your looking for a new Web Browser for your beloved Mac, you can try one of these.. Camino OmniWeb I'm sure most of you know of these but what the Hell, some unsuspecting New Mac User may stumble upon my humble site and just "Freak" out because he found some new info.. Haha I doubt it but it was a good thought.. And yes I am also a Mac user besides being a PC user.. I find both of them very useful in getting the job done whatever it may be..

Okay so I'll finish this in awhile, I have to get back to my forums.. Sometimes their almost as bad as watching "Soap Operas".. hehe

Ya well I'm back.. The forums were boring and I'm having more fun here getting this place ship shape.. Not to change the subject but: GOOGLE is your friend.. Not sure how many of you use this search engine but I have come to depend on it over the past few years.. It's nice to be able to type in a short phrase and gets the best Search Results without waiting forever..

As you may see near the bottom of my Blog or in the Archives I have a few Duke Nukem Cartoons I did.. Never fear there will be more to come.. hehe.. Well that game was the one I played the most, all three episodes in fact.. In the beginning I "Cut My FPS Teeth" on Wolfenstein 3D which is another great game, I wish I still had it.. Hmm maybe I do somewhere.. Anyways any of you out there in Game Land still playing the old "DOS" version of Duke Nukem 3D will be happy to hear there is a Windows XP Port of the game which allows for higher resolutions and better looking Sprites (Enemies as they say).. You can grab it here: Jonof's Duke Nukem Windows Port and enjoy Fragging Pig Cops all over again with out squinting yours eyes anymore..

Well enough Gaming for now.. I'm sure I'll think of more Gaming "Chit Chat" for tomorrow nights post..

On this day:

Geeze, it's Monday Morning Already Beam Me Up Scotty!!

Strange how my little site here still thinks it's Sunday Night.. That could be because I am near the east coast and my site is hosted on the west coast... Doh!!!.. As Homer Simpson would say..

Well it looks like another long nite so I was surfing around and decided I wanted to see what Wil Wheaton had to say tonight on his Blog.. Seems he is going to a "
Jimmy Doohan's Farewell Convention" .. For most of you Trekkies you know him as: Scotty, the one Captain Kirk is always asking to beam him up.. Not sure I would like being "Blasted" into billions of particles then re-assembled somewhere else.. I don't think I could hold my breath that long.. haha.. Anyways, seems Jimmy has Alzheimer's which I didn't even know about.. I guess that's cause I haven't been watching much TV even tho I do go to CNN's website every so often to see what's happening in the world.. I wish him well, and if you want to read more on what Wil has to say, go to his site: Wil Wheaton ..

I'm still learning this Blogging thing, but it's getting a little easier each time I do it.. "Thank God!".. I think I'll start writing in something that has a Spell Checker then paste it in the site template until I get the FireFox spell Checker.. For most of my friends who have never done this, you should try it, it's fun.. Image some drunk stumbling across your site some night and not being able to figure out what the hell your talking about or who you are.. haha.. That my friends is Priceless.. You can say things, talk about stuff and people you will never meet in your life may even read it..

If any of you are interested in gmail accounts there seem to be quite a few people giving away invites in the G4TechTV "Tech Support Forum" and I think a few in "The Screen Savers Forum" also.. You can get there by using the link I posted in the post I did earlier Sunday Sunday Night, of course you would have to sign up with the site in order to post a request for an account.. Which means the links in the Post right below this one.. Me I'm not interested, I have 3 Email Addresses and that's enough to keep track of.. Although having that much storage space for you emails and attachments might be kinda nice.. I'd just hate to have to wait until it was all deleted if it was totally full.. hehe..

In Science news, some of you know I have been participating in the "Distributed Computing Project" called SETI@Home.. Basically it's a small program that runs in the background on a computer and analyses Radio Telescope Data in search for our little buddies from far away. I've been participating for 3.841 years and find this very interesting.. The Seti people have introduced a new project called BOINC which allows a user to run many different such projects, not only looking for E.T. but cures for all kinds of diseases and such.. You can check it out here: SETI@Homes New Look.. Below the Screenshots of the Screen Saver is more info on the project..

Well It's again getting late and maybe time for sleep, so I bid you "A Due" or however those guys spell that..

Yep it's Sunday Evening.. Time to talk Spyware, Viruses & Other Stuff

Boy am I hating the rain around here.. Hopefully I’ll find work way down south like in Florida or something.. Anyways onto the Spyware, etc. programs everyone should be running these days.. The first one SPYBOT will search your system for nasty spyware and other things.. Just click on the links to download these various utilities, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed and remember these are all FREE!.. and if you like them and they help fix your problems then maybe you can donate a little to the Authors efforts.. Anyways back to Spybot, go to the link and read up on it, then look for the “FREE” version not the trial version, because the trial version will only last a week or so.. The next one up is SPYWARE BLASTER this nifty little program basically does it’s best to protect your web browser from ever getting any of this needless junk.. AD AWARE SE is another that will find Spyware and is also needed because not one of these will find everything on your computer.. STINGER is from McAfee and another must have.. A SQUARED finds mostly Trojans, Malware, Back Doors, etc. and another must have.. Don't forget to read up on these..

Note, You should Run all these programs in "Safe Mode". If you do not know how to get into safe mode you can use this link to help you out.. Booting into Safe Mode ..

Now on to Anti Virus Programs.. Just like spyware programs each will probably find things the others don’t.. Again these are all FREE.. One thing about Anti Virus programs I would recommend on having one installed on your computer at a time. I have heard good things about all of the following programs from various sources and I chose AVG as my main one.. You can pick which every you want, they all work..

Or you can stick to the ones your using, but to be safe make sure you keep all your programs Up-To-Date..

Here they are: AntiVir AVG AVAST BitDefender .. Again read up on them and then you can make a choice.. There are also a lot of “Online” Virus Scanners that you can use, but I would never pay for any of them.. Read up on these, you can always click to go to their homepage and then come back to these links later if you decide you want to try any one of them.. Again Run these in Safe Mode if you can.. And if your using Windows XP you need to turn off "System Restore" so the programs can get any of the Viruses that have been backed up.

This is how to turn off System Restore and turn it back on buy doing the exact opposite.. Turn Off System Restore ..

Now to the Tech Site that will be helpful if you every start having problems you just can’t fix or figure out.. This is where I spend my evenings learning and sometimes offering help for things I know the answers too.. The site is G4TechT which is G4 a 24-hr. a day Video gaming channel & TechTV a 24-hr. Computer channel.. Basically they merged into one and provide both now on your TV Set.. The Forum where you can get the most help is Tech Support .. The other Forum is The Screen Savers which is more laid back than the Tech Forums so you’ll see non-tech related posts on there.. You will have to sign up to be able to post questions but again it costs you nothing.. One thing I must stress here is that you need to read this thread before you post any kind of a computer problem READ FIRST BEFORE YOU POST.. After you read this you will be better able to describe your problem(s) and that will help the online techs better answer your questions and get you back up and running all that much sooner..

Geeze I forgot about Firewalls.. Windows XP comes with one but it really doesn't protect you from outgoing nasty programs very well.. So look at these and find one you like..

Sygate Tiny Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm (my Favorite) and Outpost Firewall .. Remember to look for the "FREE" Home Editions or Personal Editions of these..

Well enough of the tech stuff.. Here's another Cartoon.. Enjoy..

And now for some Gaming.. Hmmm..

Don't forget to view the "Archives" for older stuff.

Yes, I'm back after doing some cleaning up around here and not being able to get any sleep.. It seems there's a new kid on the block in the Auto Industry.. BOSE, those Guys & Gals famous for Audio Systems have now ventured in to the Car Suspension Systems Market.. This is mighty impressive stuff if it works like they say it does, tho I've never seen anything in my life that worked "Exactly" like the manufacturer said it was going to.. You can check it out here: Bose® Suspension System ..

For those of you that have a very active imagination and sit around most of the time wondering "How Stuff Works".. Well I'm going to give you the link to the site that answers most of your questions.. And of course you can search the site for any subject your little wandering mind cares for.. hehe.. And yes there will be things that you will not find there YET!, I'm sure they ad new stuff all the time so don't fret it'll be there in the future if you can't find it now. So take a few minutes and wander over there and see what they got.. How Stuff Works .. And for those that seem to need all the Reference, Dictionary, Almanac, Joke of the Day, and all the other kind of "Mind Enhancing Information" I have for you: RefDesk ..Besides also having news and stuff, this site could keep you busy for a "Two Lifetimes".. Enjoy.

And for the Local, Regional, National & World Wide News, it is as bad as it always is.. I'm glad I don't watch but maybe 20 minutes of TV a week these days if even that much.. Seems I remember my life was alot more Fun & Happy when I wasn't constantly "Bombarded" with the problems of the rest of the world.. It's not that I really do not care, but I can take only so much of this constant News..

One thing I have noticed lately is my typing is getting pretty poor, so I'm gonna have to get me one of those "Spell Checkers" soon.. Since I now use "FireFox" as my main website "Browser" I am waiting for them to incorporate that new spell checker everyone is talking about.. For most of you that have not heard of FireFox, basically it is Mozilla with all the other programs and utilities "Stripped Out", just a bare-bones web browser and quite fast I might add.. So if your looking for a New Browser (email is not included, you will need to download "ThunderBird" for that), go here and check it out: FireFox .. If your not experienced in setting up your own email, I would not recommend you try ThunderBird yet.. One cool thing is you can download other themes for FireFox and tweak the way it looks, also there are other "Plugins" that can be installed for added features, just look on the right side of their website.. Just in case your were thinking, No you do not have to uninstall Internet Explorer in order to use FireFox, basically you can have as many browsers installed on your computer as you want and use most of them at the same time like I sometimes do.. So have at it, I did..

Since I'm now on the "Tech" related side, the next post will include alot of New Utilities I recommend everyone have. There is alot of Spyware, Adware, Trojans, Malware & Viruses going around these days. Most of these you will not even know your computer is infected with unless you notice slow downs and alot of locking up or the computer shutting down on it's own.. I was lucky with my computer and only found a couple of adware programs but, a few I have looked at for friends were totally infested with almost everything.. I can only see these things getting worse in the months & years to come. And since Micro$oft is so slow about fixing anything, i.e. all their security holes, we will have to suffice using all these extra programs to keep our computers safe.. The one good thing about all these Apps is they are "FREE", as in no cost to you unless you really benefit from them and you can donate to the casue if you wish by visiting their sites and paying alittle something for all their efforts to keep your computer safe.. Also I will include a very good site to get Technical Help from in case you are having other problems with your computer.. I've been going there everyday and helping out as much as my knowledge allows.. They have some really excellent people there that know their stuff, also they unfortunately have some "Dummies" that just like to spout off and offer their stupid ideas on what is wrong with someones computer.. But all in all, you will get the best help you can without having to pay for phone calls to tech support or taking your computer in to the Computer Store for repairs.. Of course there are times you will have to take it in, but like everything else in the world, Nothings Perfect.. hehe

Ah yes, now we get back to the Video Gaming side of things. Since I'm a "Lifetime Gamer" of course I have alot of extras for my computer and games.. Most of the younger gamers I see today tend to use the keyboard for moving, shooting and everything else while playing. Me I like to use the Mouse & I used to use the keyboard until I got one of these: The Claw .. The combination of devices like this and the mouse will make anyone a better gamer.. When I want to play all those old Arcade Fighting, Sports, etc. type of games I pull out this bad boy: The X-Arcade .. And for some really interesting fun, I use these for Realistic 3D Game Play: Xforce3D .. These make buying my Force Feedback Steering Wheel worth the money.. hehe

Well now it's about time to get some sleep I think, so here's your gaming link for the day..

On this day:

Just More Stuff, Music, News & Games

Yep another day.. I just returned from listening to an old guitar player friend of mines Son's CD.. Not bad for some really young kids.. You can check out their website here: HomeSpun.. If I can or ever figure out how maybe I'll post a song or two from the band I had all those years in Los Angeles.

Seems the world is in the same situation as it was yesterday just a day later.. For those that like to read news from different parts of the country or the world I have a funny site for you to check out: FARK. One thing I like about this site is the humor that they use for the titles of the News Items.. Some of the Items may not be suitable for everyone..

Speaking of the "Situation" of the world, actually the U.S.. I cannot believe how hard it is these days to find a Job in this Country. I have applied to nearly 100 positions and only received maybe 3 replies in 4-months and no offers.. Kinda makes me wonder if I should have went to College and not spent 26 years gaining "Hands-On Experience". in the field of Computers.. Oh Well!..

So now we go to the Video Gaming portion of our Blog.. The last new game I purchased was Max Payne and I have to say: "What a Game".. Of course I have been keeping up with every new game that comes out, but none of them really catch my eye except Doom 3.. Of course this old "War Horse" of a Computer I have will not even Install that game let alone let me play it to it's Fullest Glory.. So I have to remain content until I get work again and hope within the next year or so I can get me a new machine and play some really good games that seem to be in the works for us gamers.. And on that note, I guess I'll leave you with a gaming link to check out.

On this day:

Welcome to LifeTime Gamer and enjoy your short stay since I have done nothing here yet.. One thing I do plan on doing is including a "New" Gaming Site link each time I post so you guys will have something to do if your bored with reading or do not want to read at all.. hehe

Since I do have around 200 game site links I figure that will keep you guys busy for awhile. These sites will cover all things gaming and I may include a few "OverClocking & Tech Sites" just to even things out. There will also be other sites of interest, such as Science, SETI@Home, and whatever..

I guess I will start out with one site, of a person I have never met but have spoken to through emails and I consider a great guy, also he's an "Actor & Author"..

Ladies and Gentleman: Wil Wheaton (I still think DATA on TNG was trying to be his big brother). haha...

BUT!!! for your enjoyment until I get time to think this whole thing out, I'll include some of my Cartoon work.. There are a few more that I will post in the coming weeks.

Tommy & Vic from G4TechTV's "Judgement Day" with the MAN: DUKE NUKEM himself. Which by the way seems to be still Alive & Well and coming to a PC near you in the future.. (After all these years)

And of course things will change as I learn about this wonder medium called: "BLOGGING"..
